If art turns into a “essence” and this “essence” is reduced to exactly two projects of each class of the University of Applied Arts Vienna in the year 2003 (without considering that maybe in one class more than two excellent projects are worth to be shown), the question automatically arises if art can be evaluated objective, if art can be taken hold of in numbers and facts.

The catalogue of the exhibition of the final-year projects of the University of Applied Arts Vienna 2003 plays with this question and represents an (on purpose into absurdity leading) attempt to statistically seize art.

Each student of the University of Applied Arts (also the ones who are not shown in the catalogue” gets his own number and place in the catalogue (shown in the beginning on the catalogue on a “orientation-system” page). A very strict catalogue-grid arises out of this. On the pages where the final-year projects are presented the information about the project starts on exactly that position where the number of the student who has made the project stands in the “orientation-system”.

The pie-chart on the cover shows all students of the University of Applied Arts. Colored: The ones whose projects are shown in the exhibition. Black: The other ones.

The catalogue is divided into institutes. Each institute has two introduction-pages: On the first one a graphic is to be found that informs about exhibiting and not exhibiting students. On the second page you can read the names of the exhibiting students of this institute on exactly the same places where their number was standing in the “orientation-system” in the beginning of the catalogue. Furthermore you will find some questions and statistically visualized answers from the students. But actually the students have never been asked to answer these questions and the questions themselves have absolutely nothing to do with the catalogue or the work shown in the catalogue. – Statistical art leaded ad absurdum.
