"das LOKal" is a social occupation-project where mentally handicapped people sell books, long-playing records and drinks. In front and behind the LOKal are two 3,5 meters high and 1,2 meters wide light boxes for which a poster had to be designed that contains the sentence „Helping Other People Helps Me“ from Stefan Sagmeister.
Based on the „impossible“ forms of MC Escher I developed the typeface „impossible“ for this poster: geometrical letters that seem on the first view like normal three-dimensional letters. But if you take a closer look you will find that something is different, unfamiliar, irritating: If you follow the form of the letters you will see that they have no beginning and no ending. They are endless Möbius strips, visual illusions that could never exist in real nature.
The poster, the invitation and the flyer put over the impression of a different world. A world that we probably cannot really understand, but still beautiful, appealing and interesting. Taking a closer look and making a step towards this other world is worth it. – An attempt to understand the world of mentally handicapped people a little better, an effort to reduce the fear of contact.
